அபு மலை பிறந்த கதை

ஒவ்ஒரு சம்பவத்திற்கும் ஒரு புராணக் கதை உண்டு. புதுடெல்லி, அஹமதாபாத், ஜோத்பூர் மற்றும் ஆக்ராவில் இருந்து நேரடியாக செல்ல முடிந்த இடமே இராஜஸ்தானின் உள்ள அபு மலை. அது அபு மலை என்று பெயர் பெற்றதற்குக் கூறப்படும் இரு நாடோடிக் கதைகள் உள்ளன. பிரும்மலோகத்தில் இருந்த பகவான் பிரும்மாவிடம் பல பசுக்கள் இருந்தன. அவை மிகவும் அழகானவை. தெய்வாம்சம் மிக்க அந்த பசு தேவலோகத்தில் வந்த எவருக்கும் குறைவின்றி பால் தந்து வந்தது. மேலும் அது தெய்வீக பசுவான காமதேனு பசுவிற்கு இணையானது என்றும் அதனால்தான் அது உள்ள இடத்தில் எந்த தீமையும் நுழைய முடியாமல் இருக்கின்றது என எண்ணிய பகவான் பிரும்மா கர்வமாக இருந்தார். அதைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட தேவலோக அதிபதியான பகவான் இந்திரனுக்குப் பொறாமை ஏற்பட்டது. அந்த பசுவை தனதாக்கிக் கொள்ள எண்ணியவன் பகவான் பிரும்மாவிடம் சென்று அந்தப் பசுவை தனக்குத் தர முடியுமா என்று கேட்ட பொழுது பசுவைத் தர மறுத்து விட்டார். ஆகவே சமயம் பார்த்திருந்த பகவான் இந்திரன் ஒரு நாள் பகவான் பிரும்மா அவரது லோகத்தில் இல்லாத பொழுது அந்தப் பசுவை திருடிக் கொண்டு சென்று விட்டார். திரும்பி வந்த பகவான் பிரும்மா பசுவைக் காணாமல் திகைத்தார். அதை பகவான் இந்திரன்தான் கொண்டு சென்றிருக்க வேண்டும் என தெரிந்தது. அதைத் தேடிப் போனார், தேவை எனில் யுத்தம் செய்யவும் தயார் ஆனார். அந்த பசுவை ஒழித்து வைத்திருந்த இடத்தை தேடி பகவான் பிரும்மா வருவதைக் கண்ட பகவான் இந்திரன், பசுவை ஹிமாலய பகுதிக்கு ஒட்டிச் சென்று அந்த மலையில் ஒரு சுரங்கத்தை வெட்டி அதன் வழியே குஜராத் பக்கத்தில் இருந்த இடத்தில் கொண்டு போய் வைத்து விட்டார். வெட்டப்பட்ட இடம் இயற்கையாக பசுவின் தலைப் போன்று தோற்றம் தந்து அமைதியான இடம் ஆயிற்று. அங்கு நிலவிய உள்ளூர் மொழியில் மவுண்ட் அபு என்றால் ‘ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று சார்ந்து இருப்பது’ என்பது அர்த்தமாம். அதனால் அதன் பெயர் மவுண்ட் அபு என ஆயிற்றாம்.
இன்னொரு கதையின்படி ஒருமுறை வசிஷ்டர் என்ற முனிவர் அந்த மலை உள்ள இடத்தில் ஒரு யாகம் செய்தாராம். அப்பொழுது அதில் பங்கேற்ற வந்த தெய்வீகப் பசுவான காமதேனு கால் தவறி கீழே பாதாளத்தில் விழுந்து விட்டது. மேலே ஏறி வர முடியவில்லை. அதனால் அவர் பசுவை காப்பாற்றுமாறு சரஸ்வதி தேவியிடம் வேண்டிக் கொள்ள அவளும் பகவான் பிரும்மாவிடம் கூறி அந்த பாதாளத்தில் பெரும் மழையை பொழிய வைக்க, அந்த பாதாளத்தில் நீர் நிறம்பியது. வஷிஷ்டர் இமய மலையிடம் சென்று இனி அந்த நீர் ஆவியாகிப் போய் விடாத வண்ணம் அந்த பள்ளத்தில் தன்னிடம் இருந்து வழிந்தோடும் நீரினால் நிறப்பிக் கொண்டே இருக்குமாறு வேண்டினாராம். பள்ளத்தாக்கில் நீர் நிறம்பி வழிந்து அபு மலை பகுதிவரை தண்ணீர் நிரம்ப அந்த நீரில் மிதந்து கொண்டே தெய்வீகப் பசுவான காமதேனு மேலே வந்ததாம். அதற்கு உதவிட இமய மலையின் புதல்வனான அர்புத் என்ற பாம்பு தன்னை ஒரு கயிறு போல மாற்றிக் கொண்டு தொங்க அதன் வாழை பிடித்துக் கொண்டதினால் நீரில் முழுகாமல் தெய்வீக பசு காமதேனு தப்பியதாம். அதனால்தான் அந்த தெய்வீக பாம்பை கௌரவிக்கும் விதமாக அந்த மலைக்கு அர்புத் மலை என பெயர் ஏற்பட்டு காலப்போக்கில் அது மருவி அபு மலை என ஆயிற்றாம்.

Several stories are in Puranas, each supported by some legend or the other. Mount Abu reachable from New Delhi, Agra and Jodhpur has some interesting fable behind it. Lord Brahma had several Cows with him, one amongst them was a divine Cow which was as powerful as divine Cow Kamadhenu in all respects. Lord Brahma thought the presence of the divine Cow prevented evils enter into his kingdom. When Lord Indira learnt about it, he was jealous. Therefore he went to Lord Brahma and requested him to spare the divine Cow for his Kingdom. Lord Brahma refused to spare it.
Infuriated Lord Indira kidnapped the divine holy Cow when Lord Brahma was away and he hid it in his place. When Lord Brahma came to know about it, he went to Indira Lok to bring it back even if force was needed. Sensing the move of Lord Brahma, Lord Indira took the divine Cow towards mount Himalaya, cut out a tunnel in one portion and moved the divine Cow in to a region which was state of Gujarat in India. While cutting a tunnel in mount Himalaya, by nature it turned out to look like the head of a Cow. With the holy Cow’s presence there, the place turned into a place of tranquility. Since tranquility depended on the presence of the Holy Cow, with passage of time, the mountain came to be called ‘Mountain Abu’ (meaning ‘lean on’ or ‘inter dependent’ in the local language existed there).
As per another story, once Saint Vashishta performed a Yagna near the Himalayas. During the Yagna, the holy Cow Kamadhenu slipped and fell into the Himalayan valley below and could not climb up. Saint Vashishta prayed to Goddess Saraswathy to save the holy Cow. She therefore requested the rain God to continue raining in that valley to fill with water to the level of mount Abu so that the Cow can float and come up. In the meanwhile one of the snake, sons of Himalaya King, namely ‘Arbut’ stretched its tail till it reached Cow Kamadhenu to enable it hold the tail without getting sunk into the water. When the Cow Held the tail of Snake ‘Arbut’, it got pulled it up easily along with the raising water. Thus the place became to be called Mount Arbut which over period of time became to be locally called Mount Abu and retained it thereafter.
