குஜராத் மானிலத்தில் ஜாம்நகர் நகருக்கு அருகில் உள்ளது ஆஷா மாதா தேவி ஆலயம். இந்த ஆலயத்தில் உள்ள தேவியின் பெயர் ஆஷாபுரா தேவி என்பவர் ஆவார். அந்த தேவிக்கு ஏழு ஜோடி கண்கள் உள்ளதாக கூறப்படுகின்றது. இந்தி மொழியில் ஆஷா என்றால் ஆசை என்று பொருள். எனவே அவளை நம்புகிற அனைவரின் விருப்பங்களையும் நிறைவேற்றி வைப்பவள் அவள் என்பதினால் அவளது பெயரை ஆஷாபூரா எனக் கூறுகின்றார்கள். ஆஷாபுரா தேவி என்பவள் அன்னபூர்ணா தேவியின் அவதாரம் என்கின்றார்கள். மேலும் அவளே குஜராத்தின் கட்ச் பகுதியை பாதுகாக்கும் தெய்வம் என்பதாக நம்புகின்றார்கள். பாதுகாவலர் தெய்வத்தின் அம்சங்களில் ஒன்று என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. குஜராத்தில் கட்ச் மானிலத்தின் கிழக்குப் பகுதியில் சுமார் 58 அடி நீளமும், 32 அகலமும், 52 அடி உயரமும் உள்ள இந்த ஆலயத்தில் 400 கிலோவுக்கும் அதிகமான எடை கொண்ட பெரிய வெண்கல மணி உள்ளது. இந்த ஆலய வரலாறு கிராமியக் கதைகள் மூலமே தெரிய வந்துள்ளது.

ஒரு நாட்டுப்புறக் கதையின்படி, இந்த ஆலயம் மிகவும் தொன்மையானது மற்றும் இந்த ஆலயம் உள்ள நிலப்பகுதி பதினான்காம் நூற்றாண்டில் கும்லி என்ற பெயரில் இருந்ததாகவும் அது கட்ச் பகுதியில் இருந்த ஒரு மன்னர் வம்ச ஆட்சியில் இருந்தது என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது. அந்த இடத்தைக் கைப்பற்ற குலாம் ஷா என்று கூறப்பட்ட ஜாம் உண்ட்ஜி என்ற ஒரு மன்னன் பலமுறை முயற்சி செய்தான். ஆனால் அவனால் அந்த இடத்தைக் கைப்பற்ற முடியவில்லை. ஒரு முறை அவனுடைய படை அந்த நகருக்குள் நுழைந்து சண்டையிடத் துவங்கியதும் சேனையின் பலருக்கும் கண் பார்வை மறைந்து போய் விட்டது. அதனால் பயந்துப் போய் தப்பித்தோம் பிழைத்தோம் எனத் திரும்பி ஓடி விட்டனராம். ஆனால் சில காலம் பொறுத்து திரும்பவும் அவனுடைய மகனான பாமனயாஜி என்பவன் பெரும் படையுடன் அங்கு வந்தான். அந்த பெரிய படையைக் கண்ட உள்ளுர் மன்னன் பயந்து கொண்டு நகரை விட்டு ஓடிவிட்டான். அதனால் பாமனயாஜி அந்த நகரை எளிதாக கைப்பற்றினான்.

ஓரு நாள் அவனுடைய கனவில் ஒரு தேவி தோன்றி ‘உன் தந்தை இந்த இடத்தைக் கைப்பற்ற முயன்று தோல்வி அடைந்தார். அவருடைய ஆசை நிறைவேற்றப்பட வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணிய நீ என்னை வேண்டிக் கொண்டு மீண்டும் படை எடுத்து வந்தாய். இந்த இடத்தைக் கைப்பற்றினாய். உன் ஆசையை நானும் நிறைவேற்றி விட்டேன். ஆகவே உன் ஆசையை நிறைவேற்றிய எனக்கு இந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு ஆலயம் அமைத்து நீ வழிபட வேண்டும்’ என்று கூறி விட்டு மறைந்தது. அதை முழு மனதுடன் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டவன் அந்த தேவிக்கு அவள் இட்ட கட்டளைப்படி கும்லியில் ஒரு ஆலயத்தை அமைத்து அதனுள் ‘விருப்பத்தை நிறைவேற்றியவள்’ என்ற பெயரை வெளிப்படுத்தும் விதத்தில் ஆஷா தேவி எனும் தேவியை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபட்டான்.

அந்த ஆலயம் பற்றி கூறப்படும் இன்னொரு கிராமியக் கதை இது. சுமார் இருபதாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு இராஜஸ்தான் மானிலத்தை சேர்ந்த ஒரு மார்வாடி வியாபாரி அந்த இடத்திற்கு வியாபார விஷயமாக வந்திருந்தார். அவர் தேவி பக்தர். மிகவும் சிரத்தையாக நவராத்திரி காலத்தில் விரதம் அனுஷ்டித்து பிரார்தனைகள் செய்து வந்தவர். அவருக்கு வாழ்வில் இருந்த பெரிய குறை எந்த ஒரு வாரிசும் தனக்கு இல்லையே என்பதுதான். அதனால்தான் தனக்கு ஒரு வாரிசு வேண்டும் என பல்வேறு இடங்களுக்கும் சென்று ஆலய தரிசனமும் பிரரர்தனைகளும் செய்து வந்தவர் ஒரு முறை ஆஷாபுரா தேவி ஆலயம் உள்ள இடத்திற்கு வியாபார சம்மந்தமாக வந்திருந்தார்.

தன் வேலைகளை முடித்தப் பின் அந்த ஆலயத்தின் அருகில் அசதியால் மரத்தடி ஒன்றின் கீழ் உறங்கிக் கொண்டு இருந்தவர் கனவில் ஒரு தேவி தோன்றி, தான் அந்த இடத்தில் எவர் கண்களிலும் படாமல் வசிப்பதாகவும், தனக்கு அந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு ஆலயம் கட்டினால் அவருக்கு புத்திர பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கும் என்றும், தான் அந்த இடத்தில் வசிப்பவள் என்பதற்கு அடையாளமாக அவர் கண் விழித்தவுடன் அவருக்கு ஒரு மேலாடையும், தேங்காயும் கண்களில் படும் என்றும், ஆலயம் அமைத்தப் பின் ஆறு மாதம் எந்த காரணம் கொண்டும் அந்த ஆலயத்தின் கதவுகளைத் திறக்கக் கூடாது என்றும் கூறி விட்டு மறைந்து விட்டாள்.

அசதியால் உறங்கியவர் கண் விழித்தார். என்ன ஆச்சரியம் முழித்தெழுந்த அவர் கண் முன் ஒரு தேங்காயும், மேலாடையும் தெரிந்தன. கனவில் வந்தது உண்மையாக இருக்கலாம் என நம்பியவர் நமக்கோ நிறைய பொருளும், வசதியும் உள்ளது. ஆகவே ஆலயம் அமைப்பதில் என்ன சிரமம், அதன் மூலம் தனக்கு வாரிசு வந்தால் நன்மைதானே என எண்ணியவராய் அங்கு ஒரு ஆலயத்தை அமைத்தார்.

ஆலயம் கட்டி முடித்ததும் கனவில் கிடைத்த ஆணையின்படி அந்த ஆலயத்துக் கதவுகளை பல மாதங்கள் அவர் திறக்கவே இல்லை. ஆனால் தினமும் இரவில் அந்த ஆலயத்தில் உள்ளே இருந்து சலங்கை ஒலி கேட்டவண்ணம் இருக்க, ஒரு நாள் உள்ளே என்னதான் நடக்கின்றது எனப் பார்ப்போமே என்ற ஆவலில் கதவைத் திறந்துப் பார்க்க அங்கு கனவில் தோன்றிய அதே தேவி நடனம் ஆடிக் கொண்டு இருந்ததைக் கண்டு வியந்தார். ஆனால் அதே நேரம் அவள் எந்த நிலையில் நடனம் ஆடிக் கொண்டு இருந்தாளோ அதே நிலையில் சிலையாகி நின்றுவிட்டாள். அதுவே இன்று அந்த தேவி உள்ள ரூபம் ஆகுமாம்.

ஒரு மலைப்பாங்கான இடத்தில் அமைந்து உள்ள அந்த ஆலயம் பெரிய அளவில் மக்களைக் கவர்ந்து உள்ளது. இந்த புராணக் கதைக்கான ஆதாரங்கள் எங்கும் கிடைக்கவில்லை என்றாலும் செய்திகள் அனைத்தும் பரம்பரைப் பரம்பரையாக சொல்லப்பட்டு வரும் வாய்மொழிக் கதையாகவே உள்ளது. ஆனால் ஒரு உண்மை என்ன எனில் அந்த தேவியின் சிலை ஒன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டுக்கு முற்பட்டது என ஆராய்ச்சி வல்லுனர்கள் கண்டறிந்துள்ளனர். ஆகவே அனைவர் கூறும் கதையின்படி அந்த ஆலயம் 1500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முட்பட்டதாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பது உண்மை ஆகின்றது. ஒரு பெரும் பாறையில் காணப்படும் தேவியின் சிலையே ஆலயத்தில் உள்ள தேவியின் சிலையாகும் என்று நம்பப்படுகின்றது. இரண்டு முறை பதினேழாம் நூற்றாண்டில் குஜராத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட பூகம்பத்தில் ஆலயம் அழிந்து விட்டதாகவும் மீண்டும் அதை சில நாட்களிலேயே கட்டி முடித்து விட்டனர் எனவும் கூறப்படுகின்றது.

நவராத்திரி காலங்களில் ஆலயத்தில் மக்கள் வெள்ளம் தாங்க முடியாமல் உள்ளது. நவராத்திரியில் பல்வேறு இடங்களில் இருந்தும் வரும் மக்கள் காலணியும் இன்றி கால் நடையாகவே வந்து வணங்குவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டு உள்ளனர். வட மானிலங்களில் தேவி ஆலயங்கள் உள்ள இடங்கள் அனைத்திலுமே நவராத்திரியில் நடைப் பயணமாக வந்து பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதை ஒரு சடங்காகவே வைத்துக் கொண்டு உள்ளனர். அதிலும் குஜராத்தில் பெண்களிடையே அந்த பழக்கம் இன்னும் அதிகமாகவே உள்ளது. குஜராத்தில் பல இடங்களிலும் இந்த தேவியின் ஆலயம் உள்ளது.

இந்த புகழ் பெற்ற ஆலயம் கட்ச் மாவட்டத்தில் ‘மாதானமாத்’ எனும் பகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ளது. புஜ் எனும் நகரில் இருந்து 100 கிலோமீட்டருக்கும் குறைவான தூரத்தில் உள்ளது மாதானமாத் எனும் இந்த கிராமப்புறப் பகுதி.

Asha Mata Devi temple is located near the township of Jamnagar in the state of Gujarat. The name of the Goddess in the temple is Ashapura Devi who reportedly has seven pairs of eyes. Asha in Hindi means desire and hence she is the Devi who fulfills the wish & desires of all those who trust and believe her. It is believed that Ashapura Devi is one of aspect of Goddess Annapoorna Devi and the guardian deity of Kutch. The temple has been constructed in a space of 58 feet long, 32 feet wide and its height is 52 feet. There is a huge bronze bell weighing more than 400 kg inside the temple. The history of this temple is known only through the folk stories.
According to one of the folk lore, while the origin of the shrine is stepped in antiquity, it is stated that the land on which the temple is located was originally known as Kumli in the fourteenth century and was under the rule of a dynasty from Kutch region. Ghulam Shah alias Jam Udja attempted to capture this Kingdom many a times, but failed every time he invaded. In one such attempt, when the army of Ghulam Shah entered this area, the entire fleet of soldiers lost their eye sight. Scared of losing their eyes, the soldiers managed to run away from there. After few years, the son of the same King, namely Bamanayaji invaded and captured the Kingdom. The ruler ran away.

One day an unknown goddess appeared in his dream and said ‘Your father tried to capture this Kingdom and failed, but because you prayed me before invading the territory, you won the war with my blessings. Since I fulfilled your wish, you have to build a temple for me and worship me there. The Goddess disappeared thereafter. The King did not waste time further and constructed a temple for the Devi and worshipped her. He named it as Asha Devi temple, Asha meaning the goddess who fulfill the wishes.

There is another folk story told on this temple. About twenty thousand years ago, a Marwari trader visited to this place in connection with his business. He was also a staunch worshiper of the same Devi. He used to observe fast during Navaratri but his only agony was that he had no heir. Hence, he used to visit several temples to offer prayers seeking an offspring to him.

After finishing his work, he rested under the shade of a tree near the present temple site. As he was fast asleep the goddess appeared in his dream and informed him that he would beget an issue very soon with her blessings provided he agreed to build a small temple for her so that she could sit there to bless the people. However, she put a condition that after building the temple, it should not be opened for next six months. In order to build confidence and belief in him she indicated that a coconut and upper clothe of a female would be seen near the tree. After saying so she disappeared.

The businessman was fast asleep due to tiredness when he got the dream. When he woke up, he was surprised to find the same two items lying at a distance. Immediately he felt that his dream would come true and also he will get an offspring to continue his legacy. He made all arrangements and built a temple in the place as directed by the goddess in his dream.

After establishing the temple, he did not open the doors of the temple for many months though he used to hear the noise of dancing from inside quite often. One day when he constantly heard the sound of instruments and dancing, out of curiosity he opened the door to find the same goddess who appeared in his dream dancing there. However, the moment he opened the door the goddess abruptly stopped her dance and remained non-moving in the same dancing position. Hence the Devi inside the temple is seen even today in the same dancing posture as was seen by the businessman.

The temple is situated on a hillock attracting lots of devotees. Though no inscriptions or written texts are available on the history of the temple, the above stories only remain word-of-mouth stories till date. However, the archeological experts opine that the analysis of the statue indicate that it may have been installed sometime in the nineth century, thus establishing the belief that the temple may be as old as 1500 years. The image of the deity has been carved out on a huge rock. Over centuries, the temple has suffered severe damages due to earthquakes and reportedly been rebuilt in the next few days.
During Navratri period, the temple is flooded with devotees who walk all the way from their home. Major parts of the devotees are female. Besides the Jadeja community in Gujarat, many other communities too worship her as their family deity called Kuladevi. There are many temples for Ashapura Devi in Gujarat.
This famous temple is situated in Matanamadh in the district of Kutch. From Bhuj one can travel to Matanamadh which is less than 100 KM by transport.
