Bagalamuki Temple, Nalgeda,

Ujjain district

Santhipriya

Few  temples in India are well known for the occult and tantric powers they possess.  In states like Assam, Tripura, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh such temples are seen where  tribesmen and nomads lived in the earlier saga. Those tantric temples were built by the then rulers to gain mystic and occult  powers.  The temples were very small and resembled like that of Village guardian temples.  Most of them even had no roofing on top and were seen constructed under the shades of the trees and river banks and few of such temples are seen in the  river banks of Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh because the rivers flowing through Ujjai was considered to be sacred. The other reason being the rulers of those areas subdued their enemy rulers by the magical and tantric powers they possessed while expanding their rule.

It is generally believed that during the rule of King Vikramaditya who was the ruler of Ujjain, few such unique temples have been established possessing mystic and tantric powers because he evinced greater faith in such practices. He used to regularly visit such temples to offer worship to gain occult powers for himself. May be, his influence laid the path for the establishment of many such temples in Madhya Pradesh and one  amongst them was Bagalamuki Devi temple in Nalgeda village.

This temple is found in the river bank in Nalgeda in the district of Ujjain. The brief history of the temple is known through a small culvert found in the temple, otherwise no other written texts are available and all other stories connected to Bagalamuki Devi and her temple has been folklores only. Few more temples for Bagalamuki Devi are also seen in the Dadiya district of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Tamilnadu.

The glories of Bagalamuki Devi temple

It is claimed that the idol of the Devi enshrined in the temple is said to be 2500 years old and self appeared in the same spot where it is installed.  As per some  inscriptions, in the year 1815, fourteen pillars have been erected around the courtyard of the Goddess before her sanctum in the temple and one of the scholars claim that the pillars may have been imbibed with magical and tantric powers either to enhance the tantric powers of the temple or  based on the canonic principles of tantrism. It is also claimed by some that the pillars could have been the Deva ganas who are guardian deities of the Devi. However the real reason for erecting those pillars are unknown and such structure is also not seen in any other temples of that small. According to one of the legends, which again is heard as  folklore, one of the Pandava brothers Yudhishtira (Dharmar) came to this temple and offered worship to the Goddess on the advice of Lord Krishna himself, seeking her blessing to win the war against Gauravas because it was the Kuldevatha of his predecessors.

Incarnation of the Goddess

There is a folklore on the incarnation of this Goddess. As per the folklore once upon a time in Satya Yuga, the universe   was on the verge of extinction due to a severe deluge.  In order to save the universe, Lord Vishnu  went to Saurashtra and sat in tapas in an isolated place when divine rays emerged out of his navel  merged with the flash rays of a  star  from the sky and it became a female Goddess who was none but Bagalamuki Devi and she  suppressed the wrath of the deluge to save  the universe from destruction.

The aspect of the Goddess

Bagalamuki Devi is crane like faced, three eyed and four armed goddess, also  called  as Valkamuki. Her body is depicted only upto the neck in Nalgeda. She is one of the ten Goddesses amongst the Dasa Maha Vidya Devis who posess great magical and tantric powers. This yellow coloured Goddess is  found seated  on a golden throne in the  Sea of Nectar.  Since she has three eyes, it is claimed that she is possessed with the powers of Trimurthis- Lors Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma and controller and Goddess of tantric and occult powers. This Devi is fond yellow, hence seated on a yellow lotus.

Greatness of the Goddess

Many devotees come here to pray the Devi  to win over their enemies and to get freed of trouble from the evil spirits especially those afflicted with the evil  effects of black magic and sorcery. Since she is also controller of the tongue, with the powers gained through her worship,  one can inactivate the minds and tongue of  their enemies and prevent them from chanting mantras to control others or to even give orders to their subordinates to do anything.  She is worshiped with a specific mantra whose brief meaning is “oh, Goddess, inactivate the tongue and mind of my enemies to weaken them from harming me”.

However such rituals or prayers seeking the grace of the Devi  should not be performed by an individual unless he had taken proper diksha from a well versed Guru because there are several restrictions and regulations involved in this ritual including not to be used  with ulterior motive to cause evil effects on someone, which otherwise will have reverse effect on those attempting to perform the ritual. There is an interesting story on the power of the Goddess. Several thousand years ago there was a demon called Madan who with the tantric powers he possessed prevented others from chanting slogans or praying divines. He also unnecessarily tortured the celestial and Devaganas.   If anyone defied him and chanted prayers, with the powers he possessed, he would inactivate their tongue and mind.   Hence when  the celestial prayed to Bagalamuki Devi to save them from the clutches of demon Madan,  the Goddess waged a war against him and killed him by pulling out his tongue. Before dying,  when he sought a boon from the Devi  that people  should pray her in the same posture of her pulling out his tongue, she conceded to his request and blessed him. Therefore in some places she is  worshipped by her devotees in the same posture of her pulling out the tongue of the demon.
