யமராஜர் பெற்ற சாபம்

விதுரா என்பவர் ஹஸ்தினாபுரத்தை ஆண்டு வந்த மன்னனின் அரண்மனையில் இருந்த வேலைக்காரியின் மகன். மாண்டவ்ய முனிவர் கொடுத்த சாபத்தின் காரணமாக அந்த வேலைக்காரிக்கு மகனாகப் பிறந்தவர் யமதர்மராஜர் என்று ஒரு கதை உண்டு.
வெகு காலம் முன் தன் குடிலுக்கு அருகில் மாண்டவ்ய முனிவர் முழு அளவிலான மௌன விரதம் அனுஷ்டித்தபடி டு தவத்தில் ஆழ்ந்து இருந்தார். அப்பொழுது அரச சேவகர்கள் சில திருடர்களைத் துரத்திக் கொண்டு அந்த வழியாக ஓடி வந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். அரசனின் அரண்மனையில் இருந்து சில நகைகளை திருடிக் கொண்டு ஓடிய திருடர்கள் தம்மை துரத்தி வந்த அரண்மனை சேவகர்களிடம் இருந்து தப்பிக்க அந்த நகைகளை மாண்டவ்ய முனிவர் குடிலில் போட்டு விட்டு ஓடி விட்டார்கள். அது முனிவருக்கு தெரியாது. அங்கு திருடர்களை துரத்திக் கொண்டு வந்த அரசு ஊழியர்கள் மாண்டவ்ய முனிவரிடம் திருடர்களை பார்த்தீர்களா என திரும்பத் திரும்பக்; கேட்டனர். அவர் மௌன விரதம் பூண்டு தவத்தில் இருந்ததினால் பதில் எதுவும் கூற முடியாமல் மௌனமாக இருக்க, அவரும் திருடர்களுக்கு உதவியாக இருக்கிறார் என்று அரச சேவகர்கள் தவறாக நினைத்து விட்டனர். அவருடைய ஆசிரமத்தில் நுழைந்து தேடிய பொழுது திருடர்கள் அங்கு போட்டு விட்டு சென்று இருந்த நகைகளைக் கண்டு பிடிக்க, முனிவரும் திருடர்களுக்கு உதவி உள்ளார் என தவறாக நினைத்து மௌன விரதத்தில் இருந்த அவரை கூர்மையான ஒரு மரக் கட்டை மீது ஏற்றி வைத்து விட்டுச் சென்று விட்டனர். அது மிகவும் கூர்மையாகவும் மரத்தின் அடிப்பகுதி தடித்தும் இருந்ததினால் மெல்ல, மெல்ல உடல் கீழ் இறங்கி இரத்தமும் சொட்டச், சொட்டச் சொல்ல முடியாத வேதனைக்கு ஆளாக்கி மெல்ல மெல்லக் கொல்லும் கழுகு மரத்தைப் போன்ற அமைப்பு கொண்டது. அதில் அவரை அமர்ந்த நிலையிலேயே வைத்துவிட்டுப் போக மாண்டவ முனிரவரின் தியானம் கலைந்தது. உடல் வேதனைப்பட்டாலும், வலியால் துடித்தாலும் தமது தவ வலிமையினால் அவற்றைப் பொறுத்துக் கொண்ட மாண்டவ்ய முனிவர் தன்னை வேண்டும் என்றே யமராஜன் தன்னை கொடுமைப் படுத்தி விட்டதாகக் கருதி யமராஜரிடம் சென்று தான் அநியாயமாக கொல்லப்பட்டதின் காரணத்தைக் கேட்டார்.
யமராஜரும் மாண்டவ முனிவர் முன் பிறவியில் தம் இள வயதில் சிறு, சிறு பிராணிகளை ஊசிகளால் குத்திக் கொடுமைகள் செய்து கொன்றதினால்தான் இந்த ஜன்மத்தில் அவருக்கு அதற்கேற்ப தண்டனை தந்ததாகக் கூற முனிவர் கோபமடைந்தார். பூர்வ ஜென்மத்தில் சிறு வயதில் அறியாமையினால் செய்த பிழைக்கு, இந்த ஜென்மத்தில் அவருடைய முதுமையையும், தவ வலிமையையும் கூடப் பார்க்காமல் கொடுமையாக தண்டித்ததற்கு கண்டனம் தெரிவித்து யமராஜர் தம் கடமையை நீதிப்படி செய்யவில்லை என்று கூறி அதற்காக அவர் கடுமையாக மனவேதனை அடையும் வகையில் கீழ் குலத்தில் பிறவி எடுக்க வேண்டும் என சாபமிட்டதினால்தான் அவர் விதுரராகப் பிறக்க வேண்டி இருந்தது. அவர் எடுத்த அந்தப் பிறவியில் பல முறை அவர் உதாசீனப்படுத்தப்பட்டு, எந்த வித நியாயமும் இல்லாத முடிவுகளை எடுத்து வந்த தம் சந்ததியினரால் மன வேதனை அடைய வேண்டி இருந்தது. தன் கடைசி கால கட்டம் வரை அவர் மன நிம்மதி இன்றி மெல்ல மடிந்தாராம். அவர் மரணத்துடன் யமதர்மராஜரின் முந்தைய சாபமும் முடிவுற்றது.
Curse to Lord Yama

Vithura was son of a maid who was serving in the palace of a King in Hasthinapura. Vithura was reportedly none other than Yama, the Lord of Death who was born as maid’s son on account of a curse given by Sage Mandavya. The story of how Yama took birth as Vithura goes like this.
Once, Sage Mandavya was on meditation observing complete silence in a corner of his hermitage when the servants of the King came near the hermitage chasing the robbers who had stolen some ornaments from the Palace. In order to escape, the robbers hid those ornaments in the hermitage of Sage Mandavya and ran away from there which was not known to the Sage. When the servants of the King could not find them out, they asked the meditating Sage about the robbers, but since the sage was in deep meditation, he did not answer the call of the servants and they presumed that the Sage was also part of the gang of thieves and entered into the hermitage without permission and searched his place. When they found the ornaments, there they unjustly placed him over a sharp pointed wooden stake which was firmly fixed on the ground on suspicion of a theft of royal jewellery. The wooden stake was very sharp on top and kept on increasing in thickness till bottom similar to the wooden stake used for cruelly killing the one who had committed a crime. The body of those who are placed on top of the stake would slowly come down, blood oozing from the body, causing enormous pain to the punished, killing them inch by inch. The meditating Sage opened his eyes to realize what happened as he was alive for a long time due to his ascetic merit and went to Lord Yama Dharma seeking justice as he had been wrongly punished and sought to know the reason for his humiliation.
Lord Yama told him that the Sage in his childhood used to kill the insects and small creatures by piercing needles into their body or pricking them with sharp pins, hence he had to undergo the same kind of torture in the present birth as punishment. However the Sage was unconvinced with the explanation of Lord Yama and cursed him that he would be born a son of a maid and undergo physical and mental torture for having disproportionately awarded punishment to him for a crime committed in his childhood without even considering the old age and his ascetic merit. As per the curse of Sage Mandavya Lord Yama had to take birth as King Vithura and undergo several tortures in his life and had to remain without any right to rule, and suffer a long life playing a second fiddle to his brother Dhritarashtra. With the death of Vithura the curse on Lord Yama ended.
