Lord Balarama

Santhipriya

After the end of Ramayana war, Lord Ram along with his consort Goddess Sita and brother Lakshman returned to Ayodhya. Several events unfolded thereafter and both Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman had to take next incarnation. Lord Lakshmana once told Lord Ram that since he was younger to Lord Rama, each command by his elder brother had to be obeyed by him. However in the next birth, he would like to be an independent thinker to act on his own whatever be his incarnation and at the same time be supportive to his brother in whichever incarnation he may also appear. Lord Ram smilingly agreed to his wish and after ending their then incarnation, they    took  next incarnation in which Lord Ram incarnated as Lord Krishna while  Lord Lakshman incarnated as Lord Balarama elder to Lord Krishna. The most astonishing fact was, both were incarnates of Lord Vishnu. How was it possible? This was clarified by Lord Vishnu himself.

Once when Lord Vishnu was resting on divine serpent Adihseshanag in the ocean, Maharishi Narada met him and  asked him as to  how it was  possible for the Lord to incarnate as Lord  Balarama in his eighth incarnation and as Lord Krishna in his ninth incarnation, both occurred in  Dwapara Yuga, whereas  Lord incarnate  only once in each Yug. His doubt was whether the Lord could incarnate in two forms which are contemporaries, lived and moved together at  the same time.

Lord Vishnu explained to Maharishi Narada that he was  not an individual, but an energy and atman who had to take several incarnations for the benefit of mankind, one of which was incarnation as Lord Balarama.   When Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Ram, Adihseshanag, the divine bed of Lord Vishnu too incarnated as Lord Lakshman to help him.   Similarly when Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Krishna, in order to help him, Adihseshanag too incarnated as Lord Balarama.

Lord Vishnu further clarified this to Maharishi Narada.  ’Listen Maharishi Narada, Parabrahman has bestowed me certain special divine power which is not available to others because I was destined to take Dashavatar (ten incarnations) to fulfil certain mission to benefit mankind.  One such divine power bestowed by Parabrahman to me was to take several incarnations contemporary to each other.  Since I needed some help in all incarnations,   I created a subordinate deity from my own divine powers to assist me in each of the incarnations and which was serpent Adihseshanag. Thereafter I had always ensured that divine Adihseshanag took birth as my deputy in whichever form I desired to help me. The divine serpent Adihseshanag was only a mirage image of mine and manifested as Lord Balarama when I incarnated as Lord Krishna.

When I incarnated as Lord Ram, many were graced by me with boons and other kind of blessings. However my own brother Lord Lakshman  daily fell at my feet, stood by my side in thick and thin of life,  underwent several tortures because of me and faced several hardships along with me. Therefore I decided that at least in one of the incarnations, he should be born as my elder which would give me mental solace that I too repaid my debt to him in the manner he served me. Hence when I incarnated as Lord Krishna I ensured that Lord Lakshman too incarnated as Lord Balarama’. However Maharishi Narada did not appear fully satisfied as he wanted to know how all divine manifestations were his divine energy (Lord Vishnu) alone. In order to convince Maharishi Narada, during Mahabharata war, in the guise of clearing the doubt of Arjun, Lord Vishnu who incarnated as Lord Krishna displayed Vishwaroopa darshan wherein all divines were seen within him.

Though the general belief has been that Lord Vishnu had taken ten incarnations, the truth is that those ten incarnations were taken by him in different Yugas in order to fulfil certain specific objectives. However as per Srimad Bhagavata, Lord Vishnu has taken  nearly twenty two incarnations in various forms beyond those ten crucial incarnations.

Duryodhana and Bhima were disciples of Lord Balarama and both were taught the skills of mace fight  by Lord Balarama. When Mahabharata war commenced both of them approached him to take part in the war on their sides, but Lord Balarama refused stating that he treated both of them alike in imparting the knowledge and therefore taking sides with any would be an act of betrayal to his conscience and therefore preferred to remain neutral.

When Bhima attacked Duryodhana on the thigh, in contravention of the rules of war, Lord Balarama was upset and rose up with anger to kill Bhima. However, he was persuaded to accept this transgression by his brother Lord Krishna, who recalled the purpose of their incarnation and he promise to help him (Lord Krishna), thus dousing the anger of Lord Balarama.

After Mahabharata war ended, both Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna went back to their Kingdoms. Once when in the marriage of Lord Krishna’s son Sambavan was going on, the King of Hastinapura kidnapped Sambavan and imprisoned him in the underworld. In order to get him released from there Lord Balarama pulled out Hastinapura from below the underworld with his axe, thus  breaking mother earth into two halves.

One would have to undergo punishment commensurate to the sins committed by them and there is no exception to any.  In order to display this fact to the mankind in the universe, Lord Balarama the incarnate of Lord Vishnu, manifested through Adihseshanag had to undergo punishment for a sin committed by him. This has been stated in the Srimad Bhagavata under the chapter Dasamaskantha. What was the story behind it ?

Once a Yagna was performed by Rishi munis in Naimisharanya forest. When Lord Balarama visited the Yagya site everyone stood up and offered their obedience to him, but one of the Rishis Romaharshana, the disciple of maharishi Veda Vyasa, ignored Lord Balarama. Angered by the insult, Lord Balarama instantly killed the Rishi.  The shocked Rishi and other  saints cursed that Lord Balarama attain Brahma Hatya Dosha for having killed a Brahmin.  Immediately realizing his fault Lord Balarama offered his apologies to them  and to atone the sin accrued he had to kill an asura who was creating problems to the Rishi and Munis from performing the Yagya. Lord Balarama went in war with that asura and killed him after which the Yagna ended peacefully to the satisfaction of everyone. Thereafter Lord Balarama had to undertake pilgrimage to several sacred places to get relieved of the sin accrued.

After Lord Krishna ended his life, distraught Lord Balarama lost all interest in life and  sat under a tree in meditation and soon reached the state of Yoga Samadhi and a spirit in the shape of a snake came out of the body, as, Balarama was an incarnation of Adihseshanag thus ending his incarnation by himself.
