Sangoli Lord Anjaneyar Temple

Santhipriya

The city of Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Though there are famous temples in the city of Bhopal, most of them are only smaller shrines.  Neither the legend nor the history of many of such temples are known and they are told by word of mouth stories only.  Once upon a time Bhopal was under the rule of Moghul emperors and smaller Kings.   The area, where the present temple of Lord Hanuman has been established belonged to the Afghans in the seventeenth century, but later came under Moghul rulers.  During eighteenth century it was ruled by one Begum Shajahan.

Although the city was under the rule of Muslims Kings, the worship of Lord Hanuman has been very high in the entire state of Madhya Pradesh.  The temples and smaller shrines of Lord Hanuman can be seen in many places.  One such historic temples is located in the heart of Bhopal near the city Railway station, in a locality called Hanuman Ganj. This temple was also patronized by the Muslin rulers at a much later stage.  This temple is called Sangoli Anjaneyar Temple.

During the reign of Begum Shajahan, a saintly person lived under a banyan tree in the site of the present temple of Lord Hanuman.  Locals called him in the name of Kamali Maharaj. An ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman, he used to conduct daily Bhajans, under the same tree in which many locals participated. At the end of the Bhajans session he would bless them.  During Bhajan the Maharaj used to continuously blow a conch in high pitch which lasted till the Bhajan session ended.  At times the Bhajan commenced in the evening went beyond past mid night.  Also it was routine to the Maharaj to blow the conch every day in the early morning irrespective of whether Bhajan session was held or not. The Palace of Begum Shajahan was nearer to the temple site.

Unable to bear the disturbance caused due to sound from the blow of   the conch, the queen after ascertaining who blew the conch, sent a message asking the Maharaj to stop blowing the conch. Unwilling to heed her order, the Maharaj continued his routine habit of blowing the conch. Angered over his defiance, she asked her bodyguards to go and kill the Maharaj. When they went there to kill the saint, they found him lying dead in the same place.  However when the sound of blowing conch continued the next day too, she ordered   the hands and legs of the dead man be severed and thrown away. Again when her bodyguards went there to execute her orders, they found his hands and legs lying severed from his body. They went back relived hoping the menace of conch blowing has ended. Shockingly next morning too when the sound of blowing conch continued, not to waste time any further, the Begum herself visited the site to see who  was blowing the conch. None were seen but she was surprised to hear someone invisible blowing the conch.

Unable to find from where the sound continued to come, when the frightened woman sought pardon from the Lord the temporary shine there, the Maharaj, who was presumed dead appeared before her.  She realized his divine powers and went away after donating some more land to him for his activities. Besides she used to regularly visit him to seek   his advice.  Once when she lost a diamond necklace she went to seek his opinion. Even before she told him of her concern, he told her where the necklace was kept and the lost necklace recovered which increased her belief on him further. The place where the temple has been established in the land donated by her is called Hanuman Ganj. Though the temple is small, its glory cannot be explained by mere words alone.  The conch used by the saint is still kept preserved in the temple and worshiped.  However nobody knows when, where and how the saint died as he remained untraceable.
